Yerkes Protest This Saturday

We received some info from GARP today, regarding some events coming up on Saturday May 3rd.
Here's the message:

This Saturday, May 3rd (11:30 am to 1:30 pm), please join us in a belated Lab Day to remember the animals being tortured and killed at Emory University and Yerkes Primate Center.
Where: We will meet at the Stone Gates in front of Emory. It is right across the street from Everybody’s Pizza. The address for EP is: 1593 N. Decatur Road Atlanta, GA 30322.
Why: This year we should not only remember Jerom and others who are tortured on a daily basis, but this year we have 2 very strong reasons to be there. One, the NIH, EPA and Toxicity Councils have agreed to end animal toxicity testing. And two, there is a movement in the House of Reps to end evasive testing on primates.
And remembering Jerom. This is from his former caregiver:

"Ten years ago I quit working at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta when a teenage research chimpanzee I cared for was euthanized. Jerom was almost 14 years old, and had been experimentally infected with several different strains of HIV beginning at the age of two. His early childhood was spent living with another chimpanzee named Roberta, in a tiny cage in a cinderblock building.

When I began caring for Jerom in 1995, he had been isolated from his two cage mates for a month because he'd gotten so ill. He looked like an AIDS patient before the age of protease inhibitors – so wasted he looked like a skeleton, and so weak he could barely hold his head up. On more than one occasion, I saw him cry. I never knew if it was because of the fear, the pain, or the loneliness. After watching him suffer through the illness for at least a year, the researchers ended his life and harvested his tissues for information that was meant to lead to a cure for AIDS. All they ever learned from Jerom's contribution was that HIV causes disease. I learned that chimpanzees deserve dignity and respect, not dart guns and biopsies".

After the protest on Saturday, come by the Adopt-A-Thon. Fulton County Animal Services is having an Adop-A-Thon from 10am to 5pm. They are located at 860 Marietta Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30318.
404 794-0358. Please forward this to any qualified person looking to adopt.

Lunch Totes and Other New Goodies

Becky from Glue & Glitter just dropped off three new recycled lunch totes, and they are as cute as ever. You can see them all here.

We finally have Dreena Burton's newest cookbook available, Eat, Drink & Be Vegan. It looks like a good one!

The latest, greatest vegan sweet treat are these Marshmallow Treats by Glenny's. And they're only 100 calories each so that means you can eat about.... ten at a time?

Dulce Vegan brought a new batch of yummies by this week, including Raspberry Swirl Cupcakes, Peanut Butter Bars, and the delicious Brownie Bites, which are currently available on the site.

New Queen Bee!

The new spring line from Queen Bee Creations features all kinds of fresh designs and styles. Like laptop bags made from recycled banner material, or a new PVC-free "fleather" material in two styles: Lotus and Flock.

For the first time, Queen Bee is also making cloth bags, made of an organic cotton and hemp blend canvas. And they're gorgeous! Check out Maple and Gull.

There are some bright new wallet and truckette styles in house as well. You can see our entire selection of Queen Bee here.

Good Stuff All Around

Looking for something cool to do this summer? Why not travel to Portland for the Let Live Animal Rights Conference in June? Come on, you know you want to go to Portland to visit the vegan mini-mall anyway. Get involved!

Our friend Jeanette from Vegan Dish is doing something neat this month over at her Etsy shop. She has a limited selection of adorable "Bunny Butt" bowls for sale, and 100% of the profits she will be donating to Farm Sanctuary. What's cuter than a bunny butt? Nothing, we say!

And finally, Reggie from Nashveggie visited the store with his family today. His wife mentioned that there's not many vegan-friendly places in Nashville, where they live. So if anyone from Nashville is reading this, why don't you head over to Nashveggie.com and make some contacts, and hopefully some new friends. It looks like they even have a forum over there. Go Nashville! Vegan Powers Activate!

Hankering for a hunk of Teese?

Teese Mozzarella is now available for the vegan cheese lovers out there. For those who are unfamiliar, Teese Mozzarella was created by the folks at Chicago Soy Dairy (Temptation Ice Cream) in their quest to develop great tasting vegan cheese that melts. Teese is by far the best melting vegan cheese. It is truly wonderful on pizzas, lasagna, calzones, hoagies and much more!
Each package of Teese is 1 pound.

Shamlessly promote us while you grocery shop?

Our very first logo item came in today.... a cool recycled cotton grocery tote!
It's big, but not too bulky and makes a great carry-all. And hey, it's only nine bucks and made in the USA!
