It's Marshmallow Madness, I tell you!

Hey, have you heard of Dandies Marshmallows? From the 3,000 emails we've gotten in the past few months from people asking for them, I would bet that you have! A little story about a fancy vegan cookbook

Hey folks! Are you familiar with Great Chefs Cook Vegan? We got in a whole box of this gorgeous title earlier this year, and just as soon as they arrived, *poof* they were gone. The publisher has been out of stock of this title for quite some time now, and we have no idea when it will become available again. But! We do have one more copy on hand that we were holding for someone who never picked it up. This copy has a few minor scratches on the dust cover, so we are discounting it to only $31. Yerkes Protest This Saturday

This just in from GARP:

I know that the forecast for Saturday isn't looking great, but we really need you to come out, not only for Wenka but for all the 3,000 plus animals imprisioned in Yerkes. Please come and bring some sunscreen and an umbrella! If we get any rain other than sprinkles, we'll wait it out in one of the nearby restaurants and then get back on the line when it clears.

When: Saturday, May 16, 2009
Time: Noon - 5:00pm - if you can't stay the whole time, please come SOMEtime
Meet at Stone Gate Entrance Emory University
Intersection of North Decatur Rd and Dowman Drive
Right next door to 1652 North Decatur Rd, Decatur, GA.

This will be a peaceful and legal protest and we'll do our best to keep it from being boring...

Wenka Chimpanzee will turn 55 on May 21, 2009. Wenka was taken from her mother shortly after her birth and used in experiments and for breeding; almost 55 years later Yerkes is still using her in experiments. Repeated pleas to Yerkes director, Stuart Zola, to retire Wenka to a sanctuary have either been ignored or met with flat refusal and a solicitation from Zola for donations.

Although the Great Ape Protection Act of 2009 will ban invasive research and will mandate provisional lifetime care in a suitable sanctuary, Wenka is running out of time since the average life expectancy of female chimpanzees is 45 years. “Wenka should be retired to a sanctuary where she can live a semblance of life God intended her to have, free of fear. Where she will be treated with respect and kindness,” said PETA and GARP member Phyllis Bedford.

PETA and GARP are asking the public to voice their support for Wenka's release as well as the Great Ape Protection Act. Currently the Great Ape Protection Act (H.R. 1326) is supported by 52 cosponsors including the most honorable Congressman John Lewis.

New Product Alert and Some Stuff We Like

New product alert: we now have all six flavors of Liz Lovely Gluten-Free Cookies in stock!

So, people are always asking our opinion on what products we personally like. While it's true that we have tried almost every product in the store, there are several products that are our personal favorites. Of course our favorites do change from time to time, but here's what we are into lately:

Ken- I have a Vega smoothie for lunch almost every day. It fills me up, and really seems to help my muscles recover better after my runs. I mix a scoop of chocolate Vega with some vanilla Hemp Milk, a couple of bananas and some frozen berries, and I'm all set. Also, I like Soy Curls made into a stir fry with vegetables for a quick dinner, and I can't live without Parma to top pasta, pizza, and soup.

Leigh- I've used the Herbs of Grace Mineral Foundation in Avena for a few years now, and it's the best foundation I have ever used. It's amazing how well a powder can cover without being cakey! For skincare, I also like Aubrey's Jojoba Meal & Oatmeal Mask & Scrub. It's gentle, and doesn't break out my skin.
The Pure Bliss Granola in Pina Colada flavor is my favorite breakfast of the moment. We always have an open bag in the break room for snacking. Teese Vegan Cheese in Mozzarella is used often in our house, especially for pizzas and calzones. And I'm really into cookbooks, they're like an addiction! So I'm really excited about Isa's new Vegan Brunch cookbook right now.

So there you have it! And if you ever want our feedback on any specific products, just ask us! We've tried just about everything in the name of research.

Let Live NW Animal Rights Conference

“Let Live” is taking place in Portland, Oregon, June 26th-28th, 2009. From the Let Live website:

Animals belong to themselves, not to us. They should not suffer in our systems of food, science, entertainment and fashion. Instead, they should live free of the tyranny we put upon them. But they cannot claim this freedom alone. The Let Live NW Animal Rights Conference is a grassroots forum for people who want to help. Through an open, respectful, and friendly environment this conference will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn skills and strategies to become better advocates for the animals, no matter ones experience level in activism.

This conference is for first-timers, experienced activists, and anybody in between who hopes to make a real difference for animals and build a stronger, more effective community and animal liberation movement. This conference is for anybody who wants to live and let live.

Sounds like it's going to be a good conference, and a great way to get motivated. Come on, you know you want to visit Portland and get involved!

New Stuff!

We have some new stuff to tell you about this week! I (Leigh) always get excited when new vegan cookbooks come out. We have so many good titles coming out this year, and the rush has now begun! First up is Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's new title, The Vegan Table. The Vegan Table has 200 recipes to help you entertain guests vegan style.

Also new and awesome is Wheeler Del Torro's The Vegan Scoop. Wheeler is the mastermind behind the vegan ice cream parlor in Boston called Wheeler's Frozen Desserts. This book has a recipe for every kind of ice cream flavor imaginable, from cookie dough to wasabi to yam to green tea! Also included are recipes for any kind of ice cream accoutrement you can imagine: hot fudge, caramel sauce, lady fingers, brownies... man, this book looks great.

Also new this week: the latest issue of Veg News is in! This is the annual issue with all of the fancy vegan weddings.It's always exciting for us to flip though the wedding issue and see so many of our customers getting married! Such a small world, isn't it?
