Happy August! We hope that everyone is having a great summer so far. As always, we have a special discount offer this month for our newsletter subscribers, and some new products to share with you as well. But this time, rather than having the newsletter focus mainly on our products; we would like to play a game called "Getting To Know You". We'll go first!

Why Cosmo's Vegan Shoppe?
After all, big chain natural foods stores are popping up all over the U.S. and Canada. Vegan products are easier to find than ever before. So what prompted us to open Cosmo's Vegan Shoppe? Well, we have never been too thrilled with forking out our money to supermarkets with big smelly meat counters. Even the smaller health food stores in our area have freezer cases full of "natural" meats.

Also, picking through the supplement aisles to find vegan products amongst the gelatin and lanolin laden pills got to be tiresome. So we often placed orders for vegan products with some of the wonderful online vegan stores. We loved what these stores were doing, and what they represented. It felt great to give our money to companies who care!

Yes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but we didn't open Cosmo's Vegan Shoppe to imitate anyone. We did it because we want to help the vegan community grow and expand. We want to help create more demand for vegan products, and give less money to the meat counters. We want to show the natural foods companies that we won't settle for foods with honey or milk in them, even though they are "natural" or organic. We want beeswax-free lip balms and carmine-free makeup to be available to anyone who wants them. We want companies to know that by finding vegan alternatives to the animal ingredients in their products, they potentially gain customers. This is why we are very proud of what we do, and why we will continue to bring you as many new products as possible. We love being vegan, and we love Cosmo's Vegan Shoppe!

Leigh- Co-owner, chocolate lover Leigh decided to go vegetarian 13 years ago, at the age of 17. Pretty soon she was writing letters to companies regarding their animal testing practices, and trading in her old leather shoes for man made ones. She used to think that veganism would be too difficult for her, until she met Ken, who helped her see how easy being vegan could be. She's been vegan now for four years, and will be for life. Leigh worked for ten years as a professional photographer and custom darkroom printer, and later moved to the slightly more vegan-friendly profession of health food store manager and buyer. Opening Cosmo's with her husband Ken has been one of her biggest joys, second only to marrying him in October 2004. Leigh's favorite Cosmo's products are the Liz Lovely Cowgirl Cookies (yum!), the Herbs Of Grace Mineral Makeup Foundation (in Avena) and Tree Huggin Treats Toasted Almond Crispy Cat.
Ken-Co-owner, smoothie addict Ken went vegetarian in 1994 after doing research for a college paper regarding the ivory trade in Africa. During this time, the hardcore/punk scene (where some of the bands and record labels promoted the vegan lifestyle) helped raise his animal rights awareness and eventually turned him on to veganism in 1997. Shortly after Ken met Leigh in 2001, the discussion of opening their own vegan store occured quite often. Ken wanted to provide an easy way for a vegan or a vegetarian to buy cruely-free products without the hassle of reading ingredients. In March of 2005, his dream came true with the opening of Cosmo's Vegan Shoppe. Ken's favorite Cosmo's products are the Liz Lovely Cookes, Rice Milk chocolate bar, Pure Advantage B-12 spray, and Crazy Rumors lip balms. Since he drinks smoothies just about everyday for breakfast, he also enjoys Barlean's Organic Flax oil.
Cosmo-CEO Cosmo, or "Moe" as he is referred to by his family and friends, is a nine year old feline. When Moe isn't busy with accounting and paperwork from the shoppe, he likes to relax in a big soft chair and lick his paw. A true nature lover, Moe is an avid birdwatcher. He enjoys the company of his parents Ken and Leigh, and allows them to rub his belly sometimes. Moe's long term goals include: finishing his novel (a work in progress), learning to open doors using doorknobs, and finding out what's in the garage.
Featured Customer- Lee and Tanya Our August featured customer is the family of Lee and Tanya from Washington state. Below is a picture of their adorable daughter Danielle aka "Boo" finishing off a bag of Stonewall's Jerquee. She's appears proud of her empty bag of Jerquee and is very happy to show Mom and Dad her excellent driving skills! 1) What is your favorite vegetarian/vegan meal to make at home? Anything Middle Eastern or East Indian, especially pakoras. It's very easy to find vegetarian dishes in Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants. 2) How long have you been vegetarian/vegan? I started in July of 2002 the afternoon I watched "Your Word with Neil Cavuto." He featured Traci Bingham and her PETA cover where she was painted as if she were a side of beef. A statement that we are all animals. At that moment, I stopped eating meat. It was drastic, but I had been feeling guilt over being a meat eater for at least 10 years prior. Hearing her talk about it and seeing that image made me want to make the change. I haven't forced this change on my family, but we've all learned so much and it's something that we've incorporated into our lives 3) What is your favorite vegetarian/vegan restaurant? There's an Indian place here in Seattle. I love Indian food. 4) If you were stranded on a tropical island and had to pick one vegetarian/vegan food item, what would it be? Edamame because it's my favorite and it covers just about all the nutritional bases. 5) What is your favorite soy ice cream flavor? Chocolate. Chocolate. Chocolate. We want to hear from you!
