Fowl Play Movie Screening Tonight!

Attention Atlanta folks! Cosmo's is putting together a screening of the movie Fowl Play tonight at Wonderroot.

Fowl Play is a documentary from Mercy For Animals that takes viewers on an unforgettable journey behind the closed doors of some of the country's largest egg production facilities and graphically illustrates the heartbreaking plight of laying hens condemned to lives crowded inside file-drawer sized cages.

Through touching interviews with animal rescuers, undercover investigators, veterinarians, and animal behaviorists, we hear powerful stories motivated by kindness and courage from the dedicated individuals who are fighting to save the modern day hen- perhaps the most abused and exploited animal on earth.

Connecting the dots between consumer demand for meat, dairy and eggs and the perpetuation of animal abuse, Fowl Play leaves viewers with a groundbreaking message of personal responsibility and the potential each of us holds to change the world- one meal at a time.

Please join us for a special screening of this heartfelt, sad, yet inspiring documentary! Vegan refreshments will be provided by Cosmo's and by Dough Bakery. Here is the address and some directions to the Wonderroot facility:

982 Memorial Drive, Atlanta, GA 30316

Merge onto I-20 East from the 75/85 Connector.
Take exit 59B towards Memorial Drive/Glenwood Ave.

Atlanta- Universoul Circus Protest This Weekend

GARP needs people to help with the Universoul Circus protest this weekend! Here are the details:

Please keep in mind that the crowds at Universoul are much more courteous than those cretins at Ringling. So it's a much more low key and less stressful experience.

Also, we have 3 different areas that need to be covered. Last night we only had 6 people there. So, please, if you can, come out and help us.

If you weren’t able to come out and help the animals at Ringling, please come out this weekend to help us spread the message at Universoul.

Please come out and help us educate the public about the pain, suffering and death these magnificent animals endure while being rented by Universoul (US). US is in an easier position to stop using animals. All they have to do is stop renting them. And the show, from what many people who have attended the show say, would be BETTER without the animals.

For more information, please visit www.circuses.com.

Here's the schedule:

WHERE :
Turner Field
755 Hank Aaron Dr SW
Atlanta, GA 30315

WHEN:
Sat February 27 2:00PM – 4:00PM
Sun February 28 2:00PM – 4:000PM

More New Stuff and a Circus Demo Reminder

Happy Saturday, everyone! Vegan artist Jeanette Zeis of Vegan Dish dropped off some beautiful mugs and bowls this week, and we now have all fifteen pieces on the site and ready for purchase. You can view our entire selection of Jeanette's work here.

A fun way to have your morning coffee, eh? Don't forget the creamer.

Just a quick reminder for Atlanta activists- The Ringling Bros. Circus is still in town for it's last two days. You never know if the person you hand that flyer to will be the person that you can educate and transform. Or maybe doesn't get it because you aren't there to talk to them. If you are interested in attending a demonstration, Here's this weekend's schedule from GARP.

Where:
Philips Arena
100 Techwood Drive Northwest (AKA Centennial Olympic Park Drive)
Atlanta, GA 30303

When:
Sat Feb 20 1:00PM – 3:00PM

Hey Atlanta, the circus is coming to town.

This just in from GARP:

The cruelest show on earth returns to Atlanta this Friday, Feb 12. This year GARP will be using a multimedia approach which proved effective last year.

For more info, please go to: http://www.ringlingbeatsanimals.com

Please come out and help us spread the word about the pain, suffering and death these magnificent animals endure under the control of Ringling. Ringling is responsible for the deaths of at least 16 elephants (adults and babies) in the last 18 years. And there’s no end in sight if you don’t help us.

Here's the schedule (Please wear red on Sunday, Feb 14, Valentine’s Day)

WHERE:
Philips Arena
1 Philips Dr. (in front on Centennial Olympic Blvd entrance)
Atlanta, GA 30303

WHEN:
Fri February 12 9:00AM – 10:30AM
(this is when the schools are there)
Fri February 12 6:00PM – 7:30PM
Sat February 13 1:00PM – 3:00PM
Sun February 14 1:00PM – 3:00PM

WHY:
Archele Hundley, a former Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus employee, has recently teamed up with PETA to make a moving plea to potential circus goers. Hundley, who witnessed elephant beatings during her time with Ringling, narrates a new public service announcement (PSA) urging viewers to stay away from the circus.

"I saw handlers deliver a beating … for 30 minutes. She was covered with bloody wounds. I'll never forget her agonizing screams," says Hundley in the PSA. "Please never take your children to a Ringling Bros. circus."

Hundley worked on Ringling's animal crew for two months. During that time, she witnessed incidents of abuse, including the following:

-An elephant was beaten with bullhooks so severely in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2006 that she bled profusely and cried out in pain.
-A trainer viciously whipped a camel and punched a miniature horse in the face.
-Trainers jabbed horses with pitchforks and gave them extremely painful "lip twists" to force the animals to obey commands

Metro Atlanta- Can You Help Save a Local Dog?

Hi Atlanta folks! Pamela, one of our very kind and compassionate customers, needs help to save a sweet boy dog that is scheduled to be put to death tomorrow at Floyd County Animal Services. One of the volunteers at the shelter said that she would put a "hold" on him if Pamela could get there to pick him up by this weekend. Pamela lives in the city and does not have a vehicle, so she has been trying to work out some transportation to get this pup relocated to a closer shelter for pickup and adoption.

From Pamela:

What I need is either a ride to Rome, OR a rescue that can pull him for me, and then I would get him from the rescue. I know it's a stretch but I am running out of options. I hate to see a perfectly healthy adoptable animal be killed, or any animal for that matter. I know it happens all the time but if I can help one, then that's something.

Is there anyone available for transportation to help Pamela save this animal from his death sentence this week? If so, please contact her directly via email: ashley_cat@yahoo.com
or telephone: 585-643-5481

Vegan holiday happenings around Atlanta

Hey there, Atlanta folks! The Vegetarian Society of Georgia is hosting a Humane Thanksgiving Potluck this Saturday, November 21st from 5-7 PM. Here are the details:

This potluck is completely vegan. Please bring a vegan entree, side dish, salad or dessert to serve 8-10 people, plus a serving utensil. Beverages will be provided (no alcohol permitted). $8 per adult, $5 per child, payable at the door. They are also collecting canned fruits and vegetables for a local food pantry. RSVP ASAP to vegsocietyga@gmail.com or 770-365-7464. Info at www.vegsocietyofga.com

Georgia Animal Rights and Protection has a few AR events coming up, so if you are interested in becoming involved in local animal rights activities, now is the time!
Here's information about a leafleting opportunity this weekend, as well as details about Fur Free Friday, from GARP:

1. We will be tabling (promoting a vegetarian diet) this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) at the School of the Americas (SOA) protest at Ft. Benning in Columbus GA (about 2 hrs from Atlanta).

With over 20,000 people (yes 20,000) in attendance, this is really one of the most rewarding ways I've ever experienced in making a real and positive difference for the animals. Every person you can help convince to go vegetarian saves 60-80 animals a year (not to mention helping the environment and promoting a healthier lifestyle).

Some of the people there are vegetarians/vegans already. They get the connection between the violence promoted by the SOA and the violence of a meat based diet on their plate. But you'd be surprised how many DO NOT GET IT!

But the great thing is once they hear the message, they are VERY receptive. We had great response last year. So far we only have 4 people to table. If you can make it either Saturday or Sunday, for any length of time, please let me know. I'll give you more details.

2. We will be in front of Lenox Mall, main entrance at 3393 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30326, on the Friday after thanksgiving, November 27, from 11:00am to 1:00 pm for Fur Free Friday. Recently, Tony Gonzalez, star Falcons player, did a "I'd rather go naked..." add for PETA. Let's show the city that we support Tony and show up en mass for the event.

Oct. 24--Yerkes--National Primate Liberation Week

This just in from Georgia Animal Rights and Protection:

It's National Primate Liberation Week from 10/17 thru 10/24.

Please join other like-minded people who care about the suffering of primates when we gather at the stone gate entrance of Emory University on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 11:00 AM till 1:00 PM to educate the public about what's happening in their own backyard.

If you're not aware of the suffering, take a look at some of the life stories of primates who have unnecessarily suffered and died right here in the Atlanta metro area---perhaps just down the street from where you live or work. While we are at work, when we go out to lunch, and as we do all the things we enjoy with family and friends, there are primates in Emory's Decatur laboratory self-mutilating because of the pain they are in.

The Animal Welfare Act does allow pain.....there's even a government form for researchers to complete and list the number of animals who experience extreme pain-----it's Column 5 --- where they place the number of animals who go thru this torture. What about those who are never reported? Don't let anyone convince you that all's well in the labs!

Read more about Yerkes at Primate Freedom and think of all the reasons we should speak for them on Saturday, Oct. 24. Please don't park on private property.

Hope to see you there!

Our apologies for not linking to GARP's website. It seems to be down. Hopefully it's only temporary.

Yerkes Protest This Saturday!

This just in from GARP:

This Saturday, Aug 15, , please join us to remember the animals being tortured and killed at Emory University and Yerkes Primate Center. And especially Wenka and the other elders who have been held in a 8x10 concrete bunker for over 50 years!!!

Where:
We will meet at the Stone Gates in front of Emory. It is right across the street from Everybody’s Pizza. The address for EP is:

1593 N. Decatur Road

Atlanta, GA 30322 (I think the zip is right but you may want to verify it in case you’re mapquesting it).

When: Saturday, August 15, 2009

11:00 am to 1:00 pm

Why: This year we should not only remember Wenka and others who are tortured on a daily basis, but we have 2 very strong reasons to be there. One, the NIH, EPA and Toxicity Councils have agreed to end animal toxicity testing. And two, there is a movement in the House of Reps to end evasive testing on primates.

What else you can do: Please go to the following website. At the bottom of the story on the right hand side is a link to contact Sen. Kennedy who chairs the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Let him know how you feel about animal experimentation.

Vegan Dogs in Atlanta?

Hey vegan ATLiens! Is your dog vegan, or are you interested in your dog being vegan? Well, you may remember our blog post a few days ago about some customers of ours who have a full, unopened 8 lb. bag of Evolution kibble as well as a full jar of VegeDog that they need to find a home for. They are asking $30 for the whole lot, which is less than you can get these products at retail with shipping. However, if you are interested but are in a hardship situation, these folks are willing to take an offer for less $$. They just want the food to go to good use! If you are in the Atlanta area and are willing to pick up the food at the Cosmo's showroom location, please feel free to contact us.

Zoo Protest This Saturday

This just in from GARP:

Please join us this Saturday, June 20, 2009 to speak up for the elephants at the Atlanta Zoo:

Atlanta, GA
Location: Zoo Atlanta
When: June 20, 2009, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
Where: 800 Cherokee Ave, SE (Meet at main parking entrance on Cherokee, at Augusta).
Contact: Amy Ryan, ajillryan@yahoo.com
Comments: Signs and flyers will be provided

Why:
TOP 10 REASONS TO FIGHT FOR ELEPHANTS IN ZOOS

Elephants are suffering and dying prematurely in zoos. It is wrong and it must stop!

The truth is on the side of the elephants. The facts are on the side of the elephants. Science is on the side of the elephants.

Elephants are highly intelligent, sensitive and self-aware beings who deserve to live in dignity and freedom. For those already in captivity, we will fight to give them lives much closer to what nature intended. For those living in the wild, we will fight to give them greater protections and ensure their continued existence on this earth.

The zoo industry has built its case for elephant captivity on a very shaky foundation based on denial, distortions and the dismissal of scientific evidence. Ultimately, it will fall.

Public education is the key to victory for the elephants. The more people learn about elephants and how they suffer in zoos, the less they will tolerate seeing them on display, standing pathetically idle in small, impoverished zoo yards.

We are supported by world-recognized authorities in elephant field biology, Asian and African elephant conservation, and zoo management, design, and animal care who are speaking out for the elephants.

More and more scientific studies are documenting the devastating effects of zoo conditions on elephants – the tipping point on this issue is near!

Elected officials in our city and state governments are beginning to listen and take action on behalf of the elephants. There is great hope that civic leaders will eventually put elephant welfare over politics.

We are joined by a constellation of caring individuals from all walks of life – from Hollywood actors and celebrities to caring citizens and compassionate students.

Pro-elephant advocates are some of the most tenacious, caring and committed people around! We will not give up until there is justice for all elephants.
